After retiring from the stage, the famous actress Eleonora Duse (Valeria Bruni Tedeschi) feels an irresistible urge to return to the theater. Her comeback takes place in Italy during the turbulent period between the end of World War I and the rise of fascism. Her passion for acting drives her to get back in the game despite the difficulties of the time.
