El Retorno del Hombre Lobo (AKA The Night of the Werewolf) is the ninth chapter in the saga dedicated to Waldemar Daninsky and marks one of the character’s most ambitious comebacks, thanks to a higher budget than previous films, such as La Maldición de la Bestia. Directed by and starring Paul Naschy, the film updates the series’ aesthetic with new special effects and a more spectacular setting, culminating in the new version of the creature created by Ángel Luis de Diego. In the 16th century, the werewolf Waldemar Daninsky is condemned to ‘living death’ along with his satanic lover, Elizabeth Bathory, pinned down by a silver dagger stuck in his heart. Centuries later, two grave robbers accidentally awaken Daninsky, who welcomes a group of female students to his castle just as one of them brings the bloodthirsty Bathory back to life. As the countess vampirizes the region, Waldemar must choose between the woman he loves and his former mistress, facing a fate that only another silver blade can decide.
