Loosely based on the story of Leonarda Cianciulli, the “soap maker of Correggio,” Mauro Bolognini’s film tells the story of Lea, a middle-aged Neapolitan woman who emigrated to the north and is morbidly attached to her only son, who survived thirteen pregnancies. Convinced she had struck a deal with Death to save him, when the guy becomes engaged, Lea sacrifices three spinster friends, turning them into soap and cookies. The murderous spiral intensifies when her son is drafted into the army, until the police put an end to her macabre rituals.
