Journalist Jake Bridges flees to Atlantic City after catching his girlfriend (Jodi Verdu) with another man and turns to alcohol. Here he is saved from a fight by Frankie, a small-time gangster, and falls in love with his partner Melissa (Diane Lane). Life with Frankie soon draws him into his collection rounds, pushing Jake deeper and deeper into the criminal world.
