The 2006 film Lady Chatterley, directed by French director Pascale Ferran, is considered one of the most refined and faithful film adaptations of D.H. Lawrence’s work, although it is based specifically on the second draft of the novel (entitled John Thomas and Lady Jane). There is a three-hour film version of the work and a 220-minute television version broadcast in two parts. The story follows the young Constance Reid (Marina Hands), married to Sir Clifford Chatterley, a wealthy man who returns from World War I paralyzed from the waist down. Forced into a life of duty and loneliness on the Wragby estate, Constance finds an emotional and physical escape when she meets the estate’s gamekeeper.
At the 20-minute mark of the first television episode, Marina Hands enters the bedroom and takes off her clothes. First she stands topless and looks at herself in a mirror, then she takes off the rest of her clothes, giving us an intriguing full-frontal nude. At the 67-minute mark, the actress lies down on a blanket on the floor of a shed. A man lifts her skirt and pulls off her stockings, then lies on top of her to have sex. The scene is repeated at the seventy-ninth minute. Same place, same situation. At the eighty-ninth minute, the man is sitting in the woods, with his back against a tree trunk. Marina Hands lifts her skirt and lies on top of him for bucolic sex. At the tenth minute of the second episode, the actress changes her shirt in the tool shed, showing us her breasts for a few moments. At the fiftieth minute, Marina Hands gets into bed and takes off her robe while talking to a man standing in front of her. He blows out the candle and gets into bed with her. The next morning when they wake up, she is totally naked and beautiful. At the sixty-first minute, Marina undresses at the door of the shed, then starts running in a meadow under pouring rain. A naked man joins her. The two throw themselves on the ground and have sex in the mud. Shortly after, the two are sitting naked in front of a lit fireplace.
