Russian Doll follows the kidnapping of a young woman who, after discovering a murder plot, calls 911 but is immediately attacked and hidden, prompting the police to investigate the cast of a play called The Russian Doll. Among those questioned is a killer who hides his identity while preparing a murder to avenge an unsolved crime from thirty years earlier. Meanwhile, Detective Viola Ames (Melanie Brockmann Gaffney), still devastated by the death of her wife, finds herself conflicted when she develops an unexpected attraction to a woman involved in the case (Marem Hassler).
