The Butterfly Effect 3: Revelations has no connection to the previous film or even to the first film in the trilogy. The only common thread is the subject matter, which is time travel. Sam Reide uses his ability to travel into the past to help the police solve unsolved cases, with the assistance of his sister. When he discovers that the alleged murderer of his ex-girlfriend may be innocent, Sam goes back to witness the murder, but ends up seriously altering the future. Each new attempt to remedy the situation makes things worse, dragging him into a cycle of increasingly destructive corrections.
