In 1951, in the dusty Texan town of Anarene, young people struggle to imagine a future, while elderly Sam the Lion remains the only one truly at peace with his life. Best friends Sonny Crawford and Duane Jackson try to navigate complicated love lives: Duane dates the beautiful Jacy (Cybill Shepherd), who is being pushed by her mother to find an opportunity to leave Anarene, while Sonny ends up in a secret relationship with the melancholic Ruth Popper (Cloris Leachman). Amid desires, insecurities, and first experiences, the young men discover how difficult it is to understand whether their path will lead them away from Anarene or keep them trapped there.
