The Vampire Lovers is the first film in the Karnstein Trilogy, a 1970 film production by Hammer Film. In the late 1960s, Hammer revamped the horror genre in line with social changes, the sexual revolution, and less censorship, introducing more sensual and erotic plots. Carmilla, the vampire created by writer Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, was reinvented as Mircalla/Marcilla (anagrams of Carmilla), transforming herself from victim to dangerous antagonist. In this first film of the trilogy, Laura (Pippa Steel), daughter of General Spielsdorf, befriends the mysterious Marcilla (Ingrid Pitt), but inexplicably falls ill and dies shortly afterwards. Suspecting a link to other similar deaths, the general calls on a famous vampire hunter.
At the five-minute mark, vampire Kirsten Lindholm wears a semi-transparent robe and approaches a perplexed man. She hugs him, pressing her breasts against him. Her boobs almost pop out of her neckline. At the twenty-fourth minute, a doctor lowers Pippa Steel‘s dress as she lies in bed to examine her. We can see one of her breasts. At the thirty-second minute, Madeline Smith enters a bathroom and finds Ingrid Pitt naked in the bathtub. We see Ingrid’s beautiful breasts, then the rest of her naked body when she stands up. Madeline helps her put a towel around her waist, then she begins to undress as well. Shortly after, the two chase each other playfully and throw themselves on the bed for a lesbian make-out session that we unfortunately don’t see. At the forty-ninth minute, Madeline Smith is sitting on the bed in her nightgown. Ingrid Pitt leans over her to kiss her, then opens her nightgown to free her breasts. Madeline lies down and Ingrid kisses her chest. At the fifty-third minute, Ingrid Pitt strips completely naked in front of a window in a dark room.
