Vae Victis follows the story of painter Valerio De Filippis, who reflects on his troubled life and the grief he has never overcome following the loss of his sister, moving between moments of confession and fiction. His encounter with the young Helena creates a strong platonic bond between them that further unsettles the artist, adding tenderness and mystery to his journey. Through an experimental and hybrid approach, the boundary between real interviews and acting dissolves to reveal the man’s tormented intimacy. Nightmares and dreamlike visions filled with blood, sex, and torture ultimately reveal De Filippis’s wildest and darkest side, the same side that comes to life in his paintings.
