Van de koele meren des doods (The Cool Lakes of Death) tells the dramatic story of Hedwig (Renée Soutendijk), a wealthy 19th-century woman tormented by personal, religious, and sexual frustrations. After escaping an unhappy and passionless marriage, the protagonist embarks on an intense extramarital affair with a pianist that will lead her into a spiral of misfortune, loss, and addiction.
At the 64-minute mark, a man approaches Renée Soutendijk from behind and pulls down her robe, exposing her breasts. A moment later, she is naked, standing against the edge of the bed, and he is performing oral sex on her. At the 72-minute mark, a man carries the actress in his arms to her room and lays her on the bed. She is wearing a water-soaked, see-through robe. The man unbuttons it to expose her bare breasts. At the 89-minute mark, Renée’s dress rips open, exposing her breasts as she argues with a man over a suitcase. Four minutes later, the actress is in a mental hospital room, with short hair and wearing a straitjacket. A nurse undresses her, leaving her totally naked. The woman begins to thrash around in the room while the nurse and a doctor watch her through a window in the door. At the 97th minute, the doctor visits Renée Soutendijk, who is still naked and appears to have calmed down. He sits next to her and speaks to her. At the 106th minute, the actress dreams of receiving oral sex from a man.
