Jack flies to remote New Zealand for the funeral of his estranged mother, where he meets her widow, Jill (Vicky Krieps). Shortly afterwards, the woman’s spirit returns and begins to take possession of their bodies in turn. This supernatural presence draws them into a dangerous nocturnal triangle that threatens them both.
