Halsey released the single You Should Be Sad on January 10, 2020, as the third single from her third studio album, Manic. It is an emotionally charged country-pop ballad in which the singer reflects on an unfaithful ex-partner. The music video for the song, directed by Colin Tilley, is set in an underground country nightclub, where Halsey immerses herself in line dancing alongside sensual and provocative bodies. One of the most daring and controversial elements of the video is the scene in which Halsey rides a white horse naked, seen in profile and wearing a long wig. This image, rich in explicit sensuality, caused a stir and was compared to Miley Cyrus‘ controversial sequence in the video for Wrecking Ball.
