When I’m with you it’s paradise / No place on earth could be so nice… In the 1980s we all hummed this song, captivated by the beautiful Phoebe Cates, who was the singer but also the lead actress in the film of the same name that tells a story of pure love. In the 19th-century Middle East, David and Sarah (Phoebe Cates) are the only survivors of a caravan massacre carried out by a notorious slave trader known as the Jackal, who is obsessed with Sarah’s beauty. On the run from the Jackal, the two stumble upon a magical place they will call Paradise, where they will find refuge and sustenance.
Paradise was shot on evocative locations in Israel by director Stuart Gillard. The film is famous for being Phoebe Cates‘ film debut and gained a wide audience through distribution via pay TV and videotapes. Remaining out of print for decades, in 2024 the film returns available for the first time on Blu-ray, in a new restoration from the original 35mm negative.
In the 27th minute we admire Phoebe Cates naked as she washes in a spring of water in a cave. A guy secretly watches her, enraptured by her beauty. At the thirty-eighth minute Phoebe and the guy are submerged in a pond up to their knees and play splashing water on each other. Her white dress gets wet and becomes transparent. Five minutes later the actress is washing herself sitting on the edge of a puddle and pulls down her dress to look at her breasts. A monkey watches her snickering and Phoebe laughs too. At the forty-seventh minute we admire Phoebe Cates naked as she gets up and walks toward a guy lying on a bed. The actress is framed from the back. At the fifty-third minute Phoebe is standing naked in a pool of water near a small waterfall. A guy reaches her and covers her with a blanket. At the sixty-first minute Phoebe Cates undresses by the sea then walks through the waves totally naked. Finally she dives and swims. This is a sunset scene, which is rather dark, but there is also a full-screen, natural-color version, included as extra content for the blu-ray release. In the seventy-sixth minute the actress has sex on the grass with a guy. Immediately afterwards the two go skinny-dipping. At the 82nd minute the two have sex on the grass a second time.
