In New York, Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock), an editor feared by colleagues, faces deportation because of an expired visa. To avoid deportation, she forces her assistant Andrew to marry her in exchange for a promotion. The two travel to Alaska for Andrew’s grandmother’s birthday, where Margaret becomes closer to her family, but the situation becomes complicated when an immigration official suspects fraud.
