The Student Nurses is a 1970 American film directed by Stephanie Rothman. It is the second production of the New World Pictures film company and inaugurated the successful series of exploitation films devoted to nurses, becoming in time a small cult of independent cinema. The story follows four young women who share a home while studying to become nurses. Their lives are intertwined with complicated loves, personal struggles, and courageous choices.
The film met with unexpected success at the box office. Rothman herself says she was especially surprised by the large influx of male viewers, “It was a mystery to me. Only later did I discover that the nurse is a very erotic figure in most male fantasies”. However, The Student Nurses is not meant only for a male audience: many women recognize themselves in the protagonists and their struggles.
