Albert Ganz escapes from prison with the help of his partner Billy and heads to San Francisco to retrieve an old loot. During a shootout, policeman Jack Cates loses his weapon and two colleagues are killed. Determined to catch Ganz, Jack obtains the temporary release of Reggie Hammond, a former gang member, for 48 hours. Despite initial tensions, the two begin working together to track down the fugitives.
