Auto focus tells the rise and fall of Bob Crane, a hugely successful Hollywood actor in the 60s and 70s. Bob meets electronics expert John Henry Carpenter, and the two become great friends, united by two passions: sex and filming of their fucking. The story has a tragic ending, with Bob’s still-unsolved murder in 1978 in a hotel room.
