The imprisoned Marquis de Sade writes a novel about two orphaned sisters in 18th-century France: the virtuous Justine (Romina Power) and the vicious Juliette (Maria Rohm). While Juliette thrives through a life of crime and vice, Justine faces a series of misfortunes and abuse, going from one traumatic experience to another. Eventually, the sisters reunite and, through Juliette’s influence, Justine is able to find happiness with the painter Raymond.
