In The Substance, Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore), a former Hollywood star in decline, is fired from her TV show on the very same day as her 50th birthday. After an accident, she discovers a mysterious serum that allows her to create a younger, perfect version of herself, named Sue (Margaret Qualley). The two personalities must alternate every seven days, but they soon develop a disturbing rivalry. As Sue gains fame and success, Elizabeth becomes increasingly obsessed and desperate, until a confrontation leads to grisly and destructive consequences.
