Nineteen-year-old Maria Schneider (Anamaria Vartolomei) stars in the 1972 erotic drama Last Tango in Paris, directed by director Bernardo Bertolucci, alongside American actor Marlon Brando. Maria (AKA Being Maria) is a biographical film directed by Jessica Palud, adapted from the memoir My Cousin Maria Schneider by Vanessa Schneider.
In the twenty-third minute Anamaria Vartolomei is naked in the bathtub and there is a film crew around her. At the forty-first minute the actress is lying on her stomach and a man pulls down her pants. The iconic – and controversial – butter scene is being acted out. The actress is taken aback because the scene was not on the script, gets up and leaves furiously. She returns five minutes later. She has calmed down, lies down on the floor and lowers her jeans to show her ass.
