We have already told you about Caligula and its troubled production. The film exists in at least seven different versions, and in 2023 a new piece is added, with the release of Caligula: The Ultimate Cut, presented in the Cannes Classic section of the 76th Cannes Film Festival. The film is a complete re-imagining of Caligula, based on 96 hours of previously unseen footage recovered many years after its release and made under the supervision of historian Thomas Negovan. Instead of expanding existing scenes, the entire film was re-edited from scratch. Visual effects were used to enhance scenes and replace cheap sets and backgrounds, and AI technology was employed to restore previously unusable dialogue due to background noise. In addition, a new soundtrack was composed.
